It may not be the prettiest building in the world, but the village hall is extremely well used by the community and a most valuable resource in the parish.

VILLAGE HALL COMMITTEE
The village hall committee works really hard to make the hall more attractive to users through their programme of improvements and repairs. Furthermore the policy of the village hall committee has always been an "inclusive" one. Everyone is encouraged to use the hall regardless of age, colour, creed, gender, disability, beliefs or status. The committee keep rents and fees as low as possible so as not to discourage anyone from using the hall. As a body they raise their own funds as and when they can.

The committee has gained a small piece of extra land alongside the village hall and are planning to create a community garden.  They are also looking to extend and improve the back room in the hall, and are always considering measures to improve and enhance this valuable facility for the good of the parish.

The village hall committee is a voluntary group of people who serve their community well.  They should be supported and applauded for all their efforts. The committee consists of:

    Eddie Critchlow (Chairman)
    Graham Cock (Vice Chairman)
    Bob Smailes (Treasurer)
    Barbara Cock (Deputy Treasurer)
    Secretary Position Vacant
    Lorna Budge (Deputy Secretary)
    Alison Sharpe (Bookings)
    Violet Currie
    Dave Hammond
    Barbara King
    Steve Thorpe

ACKLINGTON VILLAGE HALL HISTORY

Acklington Village Hall is a very significant building. It has always been extremely well used for meetings as well as for sporting and social events. It is also the venue used by various local clubs and it continues to be one of the main centres of social activity in the parish. Before the hall was built meetings took place in the school. They had what they called “Parish Meetings” and it appears from the minutes written at the time that most of the discussions concerned:
the state of the footpaths; the water supply; scavenging; safety of bridges; road-signs; parish celebrations (e.g. Jubilee / Coronation) and the provision of a village hall.
The Village Hall was originally due to open in February 1924 but it was completely wrecked by a gale just a few days before the official opening ceremony. The following extract is taken from a newspaper article written at the time.
NEW BUILDING COLLAPSES IN GALE
A gloom has been cast over the village of Acklington by the blowing over of its newly erected War Memorial Hall early last Saturday morning, by the terrific gale which swept over the district. The hall only needed some slight painting inside for completion, and was to have been handed over to the Committee on February 5th, Monday first, when the opening ceremony was to have been performed by Sir Leonard Milburn.
At midnight on Friday, when a constable passed the building, it was all right, so that the catastrophe must have occurred at some time between that hour and 7 o’clock on Saturday morning, when the hall was found to be in ruins by Mr. J. K. Waggot, who lives at the Post Office, the next building to the hall.
The hall is almost completely raised to the ground, only the gable ends remaining. It was in a very exposed position, and stood broadside on to Friday night’s gale, which is declared by the keeper of the Coquet Lighthouse to be the severest experienced in the district for a considerable time.
Early on Monday, a party of Acklington men and lads commenced helping the builders to make order out of the debris on the site of the building, removing broken slates and clearing bricks, etc. The damage is estimated at well over £400. A lucky circumstance was that £30 worth of chairs, which had just been purchased, had not been put into the hall.
The cost of the hall was £800 and the money was raised from public subscriptions, whist drives, bazaars, entertainments, etc. Mr Turner, retired schoolmaster and secretary of the Memorial Hall Fund, said he was quite satisfied the workmanship was all right. The fault lay with the night.
We can only imagine how it felt for those in the parish who had worked and laboured for years to raise funds to get that hall and then found that just when their hopes were going to be realised that the whole structure was lying in ruins. Thankfully they decided that the hall had to be rebuilt and they set about raising yet more funds. The committee gave instructions for a building of much greater stability that the original one and in June 1925 all their efforts were rewarded when Lady Milburn officially opened this hall. It has been extremely well used ever since.
Throughout the sixties there was a great deal of maintenance work done (redecoration, new heating system, toilet repairs, new furniture, etc.) and discussions about such items dominated the village hall meetings, as recorded in the minutes.
Village hall activities during the seventies included: ballet lessons, keep fit classes, Whist Drives, coffee mornings, Youth Club evenings, dances, as well as regular meetings of the Parish Council / W.I. / Young Wives Group / Bowls Club / PCC / Autumn Club. The school also used the village hall during a period of school alterations.
The kitchen and supper room were altered and modernised during the eighties. Working parties of prison inmates helped to clear up the village hall grounds. An active village badminton club ran throughout the eighties. The number on the village hall committee was increased to 12.
In 2001 a group calling themselves ACT (Acklington Community Team) was formed and organised numerous events for the community…. as a result the village hall was used nearly every day and given a new lease of life. Extra activities included: sports club, history club, toddler group, ceilidh’s, sales, treasure hunts, “village tidy” days, dance classes, quiz nights, pantomimes… all of which helped to increase revenue for the village hall committee.
At the present time the hall continues to be used almost every day for meetings, functions and club nights. It is a real focal point of the community. The village hall committee has recently improved the village hall by installing a disabled toilet and redecorating throughout. They plan to enhance the facility even further with a rebuild of the back room and the development of a community garden & play area alongside the hall.

VILLAGE HALL APPEAL TO RAISE £35,000 FOR A NEW BACK ROOM

The plans have been drawn up, planning permission granted for a brand new eco-friendly, multi-purpose community room.  Features will include, wheelchair access from inside the hall, entry & exit from the new community garden as well as new accessible toilets.
This proposed new extension is being built in order to replace the WWII services built lean-to presently attached to the rear of the hall.  This building is in such a deplorable state of repair that it has been unused for over a year now.
So, the Acklington Village Hall Fundraising Team are planning a BIG PUSH, consisting of some very exciting and ambitious events organised to take place in the future.  Due to the benevolence of the Rev. Robert Parker, we have put in place some very exciting events, some of which have already been held and can be seen below.
Other projects in the pipeline are:
18 March 2012 at 6pm in the Village Hall - Grand auction for one week's stay in a 7-bedroomed (all en-suite) Private luxury House in Dordogne, France.  See Home Page for further details.
22 June 2012 -
Autumn 2012 - A Duck Race down the River Coquet ending in a family picnic once again, in the picturesque ground of Guyzance Hall.
Also on the agenda is a Celebration, involving all groups within the Parish, to mark the Queen's Golden Jubilee combined with the Olympics.  An open plan meeting for all groups  is planned for Thursday 16th February.  A letter will be sent to all those groups asking them to attend.

One of the ongoing projects is to SPONSOR A BRICK
You can help our building fund to grow more quickly by sponsoring a brick.  Each non-personalised brick costs £5 and they are available in any number. Perhaps give some as a Birthday or Christmas gift.
A brick merchant is able to personalise bricks in any number for £25 per brick.  Each brick can have two lines of 13 characters per line.

What you can do to help?
Support as many functions as possible, or just donate.
Spread the word to friends & neighbours
Look out for the Cash-o-Meter to be placed outside the village hall soon.

QUIZ NIGHT - SATURDAY 18TH DECEMBER 2011

Approximately 50 people took part with George Walton as Quizmaster.  A team from Warkworth were the eventual winners.  The night made £70 to go towards the new back room in the hall.

ACT CHRISTMAS CRAFT FAIR - SATURDAY 4TH DECEMBER 2011

The Acklington Community Team kick-started the festive season for the village on the 4th December with a Christmas Craft Fair in the Village Hall.
There were fourteen stalls with a dazzling array of top quality hand-crafted goods with something available for everyone.
The refreshment table groaned with delicious cakes home made by members of the ACT team, and there was a good variety of raffle prizes to be had.
It was good to welcome many visitors from outside the village.
The amount of £325 was raised which, after the hall hire cost is taken out, will be donated to the Hall Refurbishment Fund.

DOXFORD HALL - 'A BIT OF A DO' - 26TH NOVEMBER 2011

By kind permission of the Rev Robert Parker, Acklington Village Hall held another fund raising event in an endeavour to raise the much needed £35,000 for a new back room for the Village Hall.
With transport being laid on there was no problem for the 135 people attending with getting there and parking and just to pass through the grand entrance suddenly had everyone preening themselves for such an auspicious and elaborate occasion.
As can be seen from the photographs below (taken by David Hammond on his mobile 'phone) it was a very dressy, but informal, party enjoyed in the grandeur and sumptuous dining room in Doxford Hall.  The four course meal, which was thoroughly enjoyed by every one, was served quickly and almost unnoticeably by the waiters and waitresses under the constant eye of the Maitre De.
The evenings entertainment was Jason King with a very varied repertoire of songs followed by local man Fred Calvert who had people almost rolling on the floor with his quick wit and using knowledge of people present did some Mickey taking, much to the delight of all those concerned.  The 'Roll-a-Penny' for a bottle of whisky saw people queuing to have a go.  'Heads & Tails' caused a lot of laughter with the final winner being June Smailes.   Auction had a very good response.  A raffle took place with many large items gifted and sales of tickets raised a very large sum.  The new Acklington Village Hall Calendar for 2012 was also on sale and bought by many of those present.
All the pledged money has not come in yet but the latest count is around £5,500 and expected to reach almost £6,000.
All in all, an excellent evening.

LOCAL CHILDREN'S CONTRIBUTION TOWARDS THE VILLAGE HALL

Molly, Leah and Katie decided to make and sell some cakes at the recent opening of the new Acklington Playground.  The cakes must have been tempting because they almost sold out and managed to raise the grand sum of £37.20.

They decided to donate all their money to the Village Hall to go towards the refurbishment of anew back room.  They handed this money over to Alison Sharpe (Village Hall Representative) as their contribution towards the Village Hall.  The three girls are to be congratulated for their initiative and generosity.

The Village Hall would welcome other enterprising fund raising events, no matter how small, to help raise the much needed funds for a new back room for the Village Hall.

ESHOTT HALL TREASURE HUNT - 18 SEPTEMBER 2011 - SETTING UP & THE WORKERS

Despite the dismal weather there was a good turn out.  A total of £451.80 has now gone into the kitty for new back rom.  There was great fun with finding all the clues in the treasure hunt, which was organised by Steve Thorpe.  Everyone enjoyed the sumptuous cream teas.  The winning team was the family of local parishioners Douggie & Cath Gregor.

MAJOR PLANNED/PROPOSED PROJECTS

BACK ROOM - Currently the small back room, although available for hire, is not the nicest of rooms and in need of major refurbishment.  The village Hall committee have proposed that the existing back room be pulled down and a new one re-built. Please click the appropriate link below to see what is planned.  The new room will be disabled friendly, completely self contained and larger, lighter and have patio doors leading out onto the patio and community garden.    It will have its own toilet facilities and access to the kitchen.  A sub-committee has been formed to look at ways of seeking funding to fulfil this project (£35,000.00). and can be viewed by following this link. COMMUNITY GARDEN - If you are wondering why an area to the West side of the Village Hall has been fenced off and ploughed over it is because the village hall committee, in conjunction with the Parish Council, have been granted a lease from Northumberland Estates to create a community garden.  Proposals so far include an area for for Sports Club Activities, a sitting out area and a shrubbery.  See pictures below and follow the creation of a community garden that can be used by everyone in Acklington Parish.
